Almost four years ago, Anette and Graeme Drewery drove down the driveway of property in Fernside, Canterbury, and knew it was their next project.
The old Havill’s meadery had character and charm, but needed a good dose of love, attention and European style.
Two months later, the couple opened their homeware store, The Old Meadery, in well-groomed and flourishing gardens. The serene spot has been made to mirror their favourite villages in the romantic region of Provence in south-eastern France. Visitors are welcome to explore the grounds, taking in the scents of lavender and the Europe-inspired ambience.
A music lover, Anette will often have the dulcet tones of European musicians crooning across the grounds to complement a meander around the store or gardens.
No strangers to creating something beautiful from a blank canvas, Anette and Graeme are the former owners of the well-known Wineshed in Tai Tapu, for which they took an empty paddock and transformed it into a restaurant and wedding venue (now Cossars). They created a restaurant with vintage flair, all inspired by two antique and rustic barn doors. Building and styling the venue themselves, the couple gave it the character and beauty from which many have benefited with stunning wedding photos.
After the two-year Wineshed project, the couple migrated to the warm shores of Ruby Bay in Tasman. Anette couldn’t resist the opportunity to open her own store on Mapua Wharf, with a focus on beautifully hand-crafted, imported homewares, including larger outdoor accessories to furnish the luxurious gardens of local residents. Le Havre had a happy mix of European homewares and bolder pieces brought in from Morocco.
Family drew Anette and Graeme back to Canterbury and their Fernside location, with The Old Meadery store, property and workroom for Graeme all on one site, is the perfect set-up for the couple who have created a country lifestyle, with roaming chickens and dogs, just a 30-minute drive from the city.
With Anette’s vision and Graeme’s “I-can-make-it” attitude, they’ve introduced all the flair and detail of a French villa into The Old Meadery store, with shutters on the windows, terracotta tiles on the roof, and an assortment of vintage and antique treasures adorning inside.
The Old Meadery offers customers exquisite statement pieces that would complete a room or all the little things – gorgeous European soaps, candles and crockery – that will give it the finishing touches.
The Old Meadery is the leading European homewares store if you’re looking for something completely on trend or unique that no one else will have.
Every day, Anette brings inspiration from her time spent living in Europe and working with creative teams, to selecting the best styles. She recently imported wonderfully elegant and unique Italian clothing so that Kiwi women can mirror the class and style of the signoras in Italy.
Anette’s European heritage means she spent her childhood growing up in visually interesting homes with character that she recreates in her own properties. It’s her intention to bring the joys and differences of European culture – the food, the fashion and the style to the people of New Zealand.
